Apple market value exceeds Google's
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Apple FinancialDigital Daily, part of the Wall Street Journal's All Things Digital site, is reporting that Apple's market value is now greater than that of Google. The current market capitalization of Apple is US$159.37 billion, squeaking by Google's market cap of US$157.56 billion. Next in Apple's sights ought to be the old man on the block, IBM. Their current market value is around US$170 billion. It may take a while for Apple to catch up with Microsoft, though -- at the present time MSFT is worth about US$255 billion. What's your take on when Apple will overtake IBM? I'm betting on April 1st, 2009.Financial information from Forbes.comRead | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ars: Jobs agrees MobileMe not up to Apple's standards
Filed under: Bad Apple, MobileMeHow often does Apple admit a mistake? It's a once-in-a-blue-iMoon occurrence, but now that Ars Technica is reporting the contents of an internal Steve Jobs all-hands email regarding the MobileMe launch challenges we can add one more instance to the tally board. Jobs apparently acknowledges that trying to rush the MobileMe migration while pushing iPhone 3G hardware and iPhone 2.0 software out the door (not to mention the iTunes App Store) may have been too much to bite off at once. The money quote from the letter (yet to be confirmed by TUAW sources) is here:"The MobileMe launch clearly demonstrates that we have more to learn about Internet services," Jobs says. "And learn we will. The vision of MobileMe is both exciting and ambitious, and we will press on to make it a service we are all proud of by the end of this year."Ars also notes that MobileMe management will now be centralized under iTunes exec VP Eddy Cue, who will be leading the charge for all Apple internet services across the board. We've all been through the MobileMe ups and downs during the first weeks of the service; it's nice to know (belatedly) that Apple top brass is clued in.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Saying "goodbye" to .Mac
Filed under: Internet, .Mac, Apple History, MobileMe digg_url = 'http://www.tuaw.com/2008/07/09/saying-goodbye-to-mac/'; Tonight, we will all say "goodbye" to .Mac, a service that has been a small part of Apple for almost 8 years. iTools, .Mac's predecessor, was launched on January 5, 2000 at the Macworld Expo in San Francisco and was a free service that included a HomePage, iCards and the much coveted @mac.com e-mail address that is commonplace today (as well as the forgotten 'KidSafe,' which was a database of kid friendly websites Apple compiled so you could make sure your children weren't up to no good on your Mac). As more users came to the service and the cost of bandwidth went up, Apple began charging for the service and called it .Mac. The name ".Mac" was born at the Macworld Expo in New York on July 17, 2002 and provided several new services including: a beefed up iDisk (with a dizzying 100 megs of space), Backup, and a free copy of Virex. On September 17, 2002, Apple announced that it would discontinue the free iTools service in favor for .Mac. That brings us to, well, tonight. Apple is scheduled to take down .Mac and replace it with a newer, rebranded service named "MobileMe." While some scoff at the name, TUAW can't help but see the other side of the picture: look how far iTools has evolved over the past 8 years. So, join us in saying, "So long old friend, we hardly knew ye." Do you have a favorite story to tell about iTools or .Mac? Be sure to mention it in the comments below! Apple is scheduled to take down the .Mac service between 6 p.m. and 12 a.m. pacific time.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Details emerge on Apple's acquistion of chip designer P.A. Semi
Filed under: Cellphones, Misc. Gadgets, Handhelds, Portable Audio, Portable VideoThere weren't a whole lot of firm details on the reasons behind Apple's acquisition of chip designer P.A. Semi to be had back when the deal was announced last month, but it seems that a bit of the veil of mystery may now be lifting, at least if the word EETimes is hearing from its unnamed source is to be believed. Apparently, Apple was keen to have P.A. Semi's crack chip-making team design a new chip for them, but P.A. Semi had "more or less burnt through its venture capital funds," leaving them unable to take on the project. According to EETimes source, that meant that the only way to get P.A. Semi involved was for Apple to pay off all of P.A.'s investors and bring the company in-house, something they were able to do for a mere $280 million or so. Of course, as EETimes points out, the big question remaining is exactly what it is that Apple wants P.A. Semi to help it out with, and that's a detail we'd expect to take considerably longer to trickle out.[Via Mac Rumors]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Jobs to Intel: she means nothing to me
Filed under: Hardware, Steve JobsAs we noted earlier this week Apple purchased of the chip design firm P. A. Semi and speculation has been rampant about what it all means. Well the Journal is reporting that Jobs spoke recently about Apple's relationship with Intel saying: "We have a great partnership with Intel. We expect that to continue forever." He further suggested that the acquisition was mainly to improve chips to go in portable devices and dismissed speculation about a return to the Power PC platform (the technology on which P. A. Semi's designs are based).[via MacNN]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

SSD or not
Several laptops have arrived this year with a SSD (solid state drive) option most notably the new MacBook Air. SSD drives are more expensive… so are they worth it? First what is a SSD “drive”? SSD is not a “drive” at all, it’s a solid-state memory device that takes the place of a normal hard drive. Essentially a SSD emulates a hard drive. What are the advantages? Speed and reliability. Since there are no moving parts, SSD drives have no “spin up” time or “seek time” (finding a block on the drive). Also they make no noise. And they are more reliable than a hard drive, better able to endure shock (dropped laptop) and other environmental issues (temperature/altitude). What are the disadvantages? Price, price, price. Did I say price? A hard drive will run you about $0.50/GB whereas a SSD comes in at $15/GB!! That’s a 30x price difference, call it 1 order of magnitude to be generous. And of course related to price: capacity. SSD are typically lower capacity than their hard drive cousins. So to SSD or not, that is the question. If you have unlimited dollars to spent, I’d say yes. If you take price off the table, there are few reasons to avoid a SSD. The only one of merit is capacity. Most SSD drive fall below the 80GB mark. But if you are like most laptop users, storage isn’t your problem. Most laptop users in corporate environments (at least) have ample storage options on desktop computers or file servers. That may be different for the individual especially if that individual only has a laptop (which is becoming more of the norm especially with the younger crowd). The MacBook Air sans SSD (traditional hard drive) will run you $2,099 for the 1.8GHz model. The SSD version will run you $3098 (the SSD MacBook Air only comes in the 1.8Ghz model; the SSD drive is 64GB). That’s $1000 difference and that’s a lot (running right around that $15/GB mark). If you put down half of that ($499) you can buy the 1TB Time Capsule backup product. And there’s a good reason I bring this...

Apple says AirPort Disk use with Time Machine is unsupported
Filed under: Storage, Networking digg_url = 'http://digg.com/apple/Apple_says_AirPort_Disk_use_with_Time_Machine_is_unsupported_2'; Okay, the Time Machine / AirPort Extreme situation is now officially ridiculous. TidBITS's Glenn Fleishmann says Apple's confirmed to him that the Extreme is unsupported for use with Time Machine, even though the latest batch of updates enable AirPort Disks to show up in the Time Machine disk-selection box. Fleishmann thinks a it's leftover developer testing glitch, but either way, Apple's will-they-won't-they routine means lots of people now have an unsupported backup solution that works "erratically." Seriously, if you thought AirPort Extreme owners were pissed off about Time Capsule, just wait until backups start failing. Not a lot of options left, Apple -- better get this feature up and running ASAP. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

802.11n upgrade to Airport Express makes WDS a whole lot simpler
Filed under: AirportIf I had to pick one feature of the Airport base station that makes me absolutely tear my hair out every time, that feature would be WDS. Getting a wireless network extended across multiple base stations with no wired interconnect is dark magic, and it seems like it never works the same way twice; it's always a mystery blend of MAC address input, switching between encryption modes, hard restarts, matching security settings and swearing. When I had to link up an Airport Extreme with two Airport Express units last week, I resigned myself to a long afternoon of trying to tame the user-hostile.This time, though, it was different -- thanks to the power of N. 802.11n, now supported on both the Extreme and Express models, provides a remarkably easier WDS setup than earlier protocols. Rather than having to set the MAC addresses of the remote base stations and restart in sequence, on an all-n setup you just check the "Allow this network to be extended" on the master, and choose "Extend a wireless network" on the remotes. Easy as can be, and compared to the old way it's a big relief.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Apple officially says it's the #1 music retailer in the US
Filed under: Portable Audio, Portable VideoBased on today's earlier leak of some weekly NPD marketshare data, we had our doubts that Apple had actually overtaken Wal-Mart as the number one music retailer in the US, but it looks like that January surge of iTunes gift cards and new iPod owners pushed it over the top for good -- and now we've got the PR to prove it. Apple's giving out the same "4 billion songs to 50 million customers" numbers as it has for a while now, but it says iTunes was the biggest game in town in January and February. Of course, there's a lot of 2008 left to go, so Wally might make a comeback -- it was the overall champ last year -- but Apple's achievement is still a major milestone for digitally distributed content, and we hope to see a lot more iTunes-like services on that list soon. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Take it from Mike Wendland (freep.com). If you don’t back up, scary things could happen to your photos, music, and all your documents. Though backing up used to be a tedious affair, Time Capsule has made it amazingly easy. “Time Capsule automatically backs up everything, every hour, every day so you no longer have to worry about losing your digital life.” In fact, Wendland is so impressed, he calls Time Capsule “the most advanced backup device and WiFi station I have ever seen.”

Kudos for the “outstanding AirPort Express”
“If you use iTunes,” writes Eliot Van Buskirk, “you should consider the AirPort Express.” That’s because the diminutive base station not only “supports faster 802.11n wireless networks” and “enables easy printer sharing.” It also facilitates “quick-and-easy iTunes streaming.” Just “plug the Airport Express into a wall outlet near your stereo, run a single cable” (analog or digital) “to your sound system, run the configuration software, and you’re all set.”

Time Capsule: shipping now
Filed under: Accessories, AppleWhat a difference a day makes. Yesterday I penned a post reassuring people that the Time Capsule would, in fact, be shipping on time (where on time is 'by the end of February'). We are now getting reports that people who pre-order the Time Capsule are receiving shipping notifications. See? Nothing to worry about.Sadly, my Time Capsule is still being prepared for shipment, but it should ship by tomorrow. Soon I will not have to hang my head in shame when someone asks me about my backup strategy. Thanks to everyone who sent this in.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Reviews
“AirPort Express is a tiny titan” among Wi-Fi devices
Calling it “one of my favorite wireless gadgets since its introduction,” Bob Levitus (Houston Chronicle) praises the latest version of AirPort Express, which supports fast 802.11n Wi-Fi. “Setting up your AirPort Express to act as a wireless base station or remote audio receiver or to share a printer couldn’t be easier,” he says. “I’ve taken it on the road and all over my house, and it has never failed to perform perfectly.”

Delivering automatic, constant, complete, wireless backups
“You can’t imagine how satisfying it is to know that if your hard drive dies, you will lose no more than one hour of work,” relates David Pogue (nytimes.com) in his review of Time Capsule. “The Time Machine automatic backup feature of the latest Mac OS X version backs up your Macs onto the Time Capsule, automatically, constantly, completely and wirelessly. And in my book, automatic, constant, complete backups are the only kind that really count.”

“I can’t think of a simpler, easier backup system than Time Capsule”
Explains Rob Pegoraro (washingtonpost.com) Time Capsule “combines a fast 802.11n WiFi router and a massive external hard drive in an enclosure no bigger than a regular AirPort Extreme router.” Working in conjunction with Time Machine, it “allows you to back up every Mac in the home over your home network.” And, notes Pegoraro, since he began using it, “its primary trait has been a near-complete lack of drama.”

“Everyone can benefit from Time Capsule”
Though many people equate backing up with “doing taxes or changing the oil,” Dwight Silverman (Houston Chronicle) wants us to know that “Apple has come up with a hardware and software combination that makes backups almost effortless.” Silverman’s talking about Time Capsule — which offers high-speed wireless backup to a 500GB or 1TB hard drive — and Time Machine. An automatic backup utility, Time Machine is built right into Mac OS X Leopard, and Silverman considers it “the simplest backup solution available, bar none.”

Time Capsule “makes wireless backups a snap”
“I’ve been using Time Capsule for a few weeks now, courtesy of Apple, and have found it to be an ideal backup for anyone with a Mac — especially a MacBook, MacBook Air or MacBook Pro,” relates Ken Mingis (computerworld.com). “Not only does it serve as an 802.11n Wi-Fi router, beaming the Internet throughout the house or small office, but it also marries that router with a server-grade Serial ATA hard drive spinning at 7,200 rpm.”

iTunes 7.7 and Windows, trouble getting the update?
Trouble getting iTunes 7.7 for Windows? Two problems you might encounter:  1. The Check For Updates (Help menu) from your current version of iTunes “Download Update” button doesn’t do anything.  You click it, but nothing happens. 2. Apple Software Update says there is new software available, but a check says “all up to date”. The solution is easy, go to http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ and download and install manually.  I know obvious but not so obvious… Apple - iTunes - iTunes(iTunes)
