Apple market value exceeds Google's
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Apple FinancialDigital Daily, part of the Wall Street Journal's All Things Digital site, is reporting that Apple's market value is now greater than that of Google. The current market capitalization of Apple is US$159.37 billion, squeaking by Google's market cap of US$157.56 billion. Next in Apple's sights ought to be the old man on the block, IBM. Their current market value is around US$170 billion. It may take a while for Apple to catch up with Microsoft, though -- at the present time MSFT is worth about US$255 billion. What's your take on when Apple will overtake IBM? I'm betting on April 1st, 2009.Financial information from Forbes.comRead | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ars: Jobs agrees MobileMe not up to Apple's standards
Filed under: Bad Apple, MobileMeHow often does Apple admit a mistake? It's a once-in-a-blue-iMoon occurrence, but now that Ars Technica is reporting the contents of an internal Steve Jobs all-hands email regarding the MobileMe launch challenges we can add one more instance to the tally board. Jobs apparently acknowledges that trying to rush the MobileMe migration while pushing iPhone 3G hardware and iPhone 2.0 software out the door (not to mention the iTunes App Store) may have been too much to bite off at once. The money quote from the letter (yet to be confirmed by TUAW sources) is here:"The MobileMe launch clearly demonstrates that we have more to learn about Internet services," Jobs says. "And learn we will. The vision of MobileMe is both exciting and ambitious, and we will press on to make it a service we are all proud of by the end of this year."Ars also notes that MobileMe management will now be centralized under iTunes exec VP Eddy Cue, who will be leading the charge for all Apple internet services across the board. We've all been through the MobileMe ups and downs during the first weeks of the service; it's nice to know (belatedly) that Apple top brass is clued in.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Saying "goodbye" to .Mac
Filed under: Internet, .Mac, Apple History, MobileMe digg_url = 'http://www.tuaw.com/2008/07/09/saying-goodbye-to-mac/'; Tonight, we will all say "goodbye" to .Mac, a service that has been a small part of Apple for almost 8 years. iTools, .Mac's predecessor, was launched on January 5, 2000 at the Macworld Expo in San Francisco and was a free service that included a HomePage, iCards and the much coveted @mac.com e-mail address that is commonplace today (as well as the forgotten 'KidSafe,' which was a database of kid friendly websites Apple compiled so you could make sure your children weren't up to no good on your Mac). As more users came to the service and the cost of bandwidth went up, Apple began charging for the service and called it .Mac. The name ".Mac" was born at the Macworld Expo in New York on July 17, 2002 and provided several new services including: a beefed up iDisk (with a dizzying 100 megs of space), Backup, and a free copy of Virex. On September 17, 2002, Apple announced that it would discontinue the free iTools service in favor for .Mac. That brings us to, well, tonight. Apple is scheduled to take down .Mac and replace it with a newer, rebranded service named "MobileMe." While some scoff at the name, TUAW can't help but see the other side of the picture: look how far iTools has evolved over the past 8 years. So, join us in saying, "So long old friend, we hardly knew ye." Do you have a favorite story to tell about iTools or .Mac? Be sure to mention it in the comments below! Apple is scheduled to take down the .Mac service between 6 p.m. and 12 a.m. pacific time.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

SSD-equipped AppleTV
Filed under: Hardware, Mods, Apple TVIt's June, you're bored, and you're looking at that 40GB AppleTV sitting on your media center. The next thing you know, you've bought a solid-state drive (SSD) and created the world's first (as far as we know) SSD-equipped Apple TV.Josh Lee modded his original AppleTV not to increase the size of the drive -- he's using a 32GB Transcend SSD since he stores most of his media on NAS -- or speed it up. In fact, it sounds like he did the mod just for the hell of it. The benefits of the mod include less heat generation by the AppleTV and almost silent operation.Josh reports in his email to AppleTVHacks that all he had to do was take an image of his AppleTV drive, mount it, resize the media partition, DD the image to the SSD , do a factory restore, use the patch2stick, and the SSD was quickly up and running. Whew!Your challenge, TUAW reader, is to nab one of those fast 256GB Samsung SSD's when they ship this fall and use the Josh Lee method to create a fast, cool, and silent FrankenAppleTV. If you're the first, tell us about it.A big thank you to Luck for the pointer to AppleTVHacksRead | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Details emerge on Apple's acquistion of chip designer P.A. Semi
Filed under: Cellphones, Misc. Gadgets, Handhelds, Portable Audio, Portable VideoThere weren't a whole lot of firm details on the reasons behind Apple's acquisition of chip designer P.A. Semi to be had back when the deal was announced last month, but it seems that a bit of the veil of mystery may now be lifting, at least if the word EETimes is hearing from its unnamed source is to be believed. Apparently, Apple was keen to have P.A. Semi's crack chip-making team design a new chip for them, but P.A. Semi had "more or less burnt through its venture capital funds," leaving them unable to take on the project. According to EETimes source, that meant that the only way to get P.A. Semi involved was for Apple to pay off all of P.A.'s investors and bring the company in-house, something they were able to do for a mere $280 million or so. Of course, as EETimes points out, the big question remaining is exactly what it is that Apple wants P.A. Semi to help it out with, and that's a detail we'd expect to take considerably longer to trickle out.[Via Mac Rumors]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Jobs to Intel: she means nothing to me
Filed under: Hardware, Steve JobsAs we noted earlier this week Apple purchased of the chip design firm P. A. Semi and speculation has been rampant about what it all means. Well the Journal is reporting that Jobs spoke recently about Apple's relationship with Intel saying: "We have a great partnership with Intel. We expect that to continue forever." He further suggested that the acquisition was mainly to improve chips to go in portable devices and dismissed speculation about a return to the Power PC platform (the technology on which P. A. Semi's designs are based).[via MacNN]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Apple officially says it's the #1 music retailer in the US
Filed under: Portable Audio, Portable VideoBased on today's earlier leak of some weekly NPD marketshare data, we had our doubts that Apple had actually overtaken Wal-Mart as the number one music retailer in the US, but it looks like that January surge of iTunes gift cards and new iPod owners pushed it over the top for good -- and now we've got the PR to prove it. Apple's giving out the same "4 billion songs to 50 million customers" numbers as it has for a while now, but it says iTunes was the biggest game in town in January and February. Of course, there's a lot of 2008 left to go, so Wally might make a comeback -- it was the overall champ last year -- but Apple's achievement is still a major milestone for digitally distributed content, and we hope to see a lot more iTunes-like services on that list soon. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

TV shows for German iTunes users
Filed under: iTunes German iTunes users just got a payload of TV Sendungen (transmission programs) to enhance their multimedia shopping experience. The 35 available shows are mostly of German origin, including series from the German Channels ProSieben, Sat.1, ZDF Enterprises and Brainpool, as well as German versions of U.S. shows from ABC Studios and MTV Networks. The shows are priced from 1,99 Euro to 2,49 Euro. Shows from Germany include "Stromberg," "GSG9" and "Tramitz and Friends," along with the German versions of "Grey's Anatomy," Season 3 of "Lost," Season 6 of "South Park" (as noted by several tipsters) and the oft-overlooked "Hannah Montana," which all of our German tipsters left off the list. Oh, come on, Hannah Montana makes the wait worthwhile, doesn't she? We're glad to see another jump in the content iTunes provides in countries outside of the U.S. and hope for more to come! Apple TV update 2.0.1
Filed under: Software Update, Apple TV Apple has updated the Apple TV software to version 2.0.1. This is the first update to the Apple TV since the game-changing Take 2 software was released. Generally, with these "point releases," Apple doesn't change many things (mostly bug fixes and such). The only significant difference in the update is the implementation of Genres in the "My Movies" list. Have you noticed any new features that we haven't covered? Be sure to tell us in the comments. Thanks to everyone that sent in a tip!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Analysis: Apple’s environmental progress is ongoing
Apple has met some of the goals Steve Jobs outlined in his May 2007 letter on the company’s environmental policies. But nearly a year after the Apple CEO first published his open letter, work remains to be done on making Apple’s product offerings more environmentally friendly.

“I adore the Apple TV”
After all, as Julio Ojeda-Zapata (twincities.com) explains, “Apple TV is a joy to use.” And it proved “a godsend for one of my family’s recent movie nights” when frigid temperatures precluded a trip to a video store. He downloaded Disney’s The Game Plan, and the movie “was ready for watching soon after the download initiated. Viewing was flawless; ditto for Garfield, another family-night rental.” What’s more, “movie rentals sound superb on the Apple TV, as well, now that it has support for Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound.”

Renting movies — and more — on Apple TV “incredibly simple”
Before this year’s Oscars, Larry Magid (cbsnews.com) realized that he hadn’t seen a number of the nominated movies. Last year that might have meant a trip to the video store. “But this year, we got to watch our rented nominated films in our living room on our high definition set thanks to Apple’s newly enhanced Apple TV.” And, Magid notes, “you don’t have to use your computer to buy or rent movies, music or download free podcasts to your TV. You can do it from the comfort of your easy chair using only the small Apple remote control. The process is incredibly simple.”

New Apple TV — “fantastic”
“Downloading and watching recent movies — in high-definition, from the comfort of your living room — is a stupendous experience,” writes Gary Krakow (thestreet.com)in his review of Apple TV. Krakow “chose the fabulous Disney/Pixar feature Ratatouille to test the system. All I can say is wow! Apple TV video quality is spectacular. The audio is pretty special, too. All in all, video rental has never been this quick and easy.”

iTunes 7.6.1 update + 99 cent weekly movie rental special
Apple has updated iTunes to 7.6.1. iTunes 7.6.1 includes several bug fixes and improves compatibility with Apple TV software version 2.0.In addition, Apple nows offer a weekly 99 cent weekly movie rental special. This is good news... while Apple's prices aren't overly high with respect to its competition, Apple really needs to push demand on the Apple TV platform. We think Apple should offer the Apple TV with a "use" rebate model... after say 50 rentals, each buyer gets a coupon for say $100 of iTunes rentals/purchases.

Apple TV “even better”
Apple TV remains “a fantastic way for people to get their iTunes-purchased movies, music and TV shows from their computers onto their living room TVs.” And now “what’s even better” about Apple TV Take Two, concludes Jason Chen (Gizmodo) “is that it doesn’t require a computer to function. People can plop down an Apple TV into their homes and rent movies, listen to iTunes music, sync up with their grandchildren’s Flickr or .Mac streams, or just waste an hour surfing YouTube.”

Checking out Apple TV Take Two
Christopher Breen (macworld.com) takes us on a tour of Apple TV that begins with downloading the software update and ends with the big question—”How’s it look?” To which Breen responds, “Darned good.” After renting Live Free or Die Hard. Breen reports that “ the picture is great on my 42-inch Panasonic plasma display. With a digital audio cable connected to my AV receiver the movie caused the receiver’s 5.1 Dolby Digital Audio light to glow and the resulting sound was bigger than anything I’ve heard come out of the box previously.”

Apple TV offers limited internet radio support
Filed under: Internet Tools, Apple TVApple TV Source notes that the latest 2.0.2 update makes internet radio work a little better with the Apple TV. Basically you can play internet radio streams on the Apple TV if you have it synced to an iTunes computer with a playlist containing the streams. Before the update the source computer had to be on for this to work. Now, however, the Apple TV will retain the playlist even without the iTunes computer until it is restarted (it will retain the playlists even if put to sleep). The original post has complete instructions.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Patent filing shows DVR for Apple TV
Filed under: Apple TVGallery: Apple TV DVR patent filingEarlier this week, AppleInsider reported on an Apple TV patent filed in 2006 and just published; it shows DVR features, and the patent also includes a feature where the iPod could be docked with the Apple TV to sync content for on-the-go viewing. "For example, program data for upcoming programs, e.g., for the next month, can be downloaded and stored on the remote control device," Apple said in the patent. "Thereafter, a user of the remote control device can search programs that are to be broadcast and determine which programs to record. The recording settings can be programmed onto the remote control device, and then be provided to the video device when a data communication is established between the remote control device and the video device."If Apple manages to implement DVR functionality for the Apple TV, it could definitely bring a game-changing device to the TV industry. Who knows, it could become a direct competitor to the TiVo. Be sure to look through our gallery of patent filing pictures. [via AppleInsider]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

iTunes 7.7 and Windows, trouble getting the update?
Trouble getting iTunes 7.7 for Windows? Two problems you might encounter:  1. The Check For Updates (Help menu) from your current version of iTunes “Download Update” button doesn’t do anything.  You click it, but nothing happens. 2. Apple Software Update says there is new software available, but a check says “all up to date”. The solution is easy, go to http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ and download and install manually.  I know obvious but not so obvious… Apple - iTunes - iTunes(iTunes)
